Sheffield Wednesday proved their quality in Rovers penultimate pre-season friendly game, which saw them fall to a narrow 2-1 defeat.
From the start Fernando Forestieri didn’t wait around, he tried his luck early on with a sublime shot on goal from distance – putting Marosi to the test early on.
This proved a recurring theme in the early moments, with Marosi being called into action numerous amounts of time, along with his centre backs, Andy Butler and Craig Alcock.
After absorbing a lot of pressure; Marosi finally began to show cracks as he tried passing to Whiteman, only for it to go straight to the feet of Ross Wallace – who, thankfully for Marosi, didn’t punish Rovers.
Then came their goal. This time it wasn’t the set piece that un-did Rovers, it was a lapse in concentration, when Wednesday’s veteran winger, Ross Wallace, crossed into the box for Winnall to easily head home.
Rovers quickly responded to this with Liam Mandeville keeping up his good pre-season form by netting his sixth goal of pre-season following a mouth-watering cross from Danny Andrew on the left.
Second half came round, and Rovers were in full control. The pace of the game picked up and Rovers passing became more accurate – there was a sense of self belief within the squad, whereas Wednesday looked like they were still in changing rooms.
However, Rovers didn’t make their dominance pay, as Wednesday got the winning goal, after Gary Hooper chipped Rovers Slovakian keeper, Marko Marosi.
