As the season approaches we’re looking at who will hold the number one spot – in goal – for the upcoming season.

This comes after Marko Marosi signs a one-year contract extension with the club after joining Doncaster in 2014, from Wigan, signed by Paul Dickov.

Marosi since hasn’t really hit the ground running, making rare appearances when it was an emergency, because our number one goalie was injured, at that current time.

During the 2015/16 season it looked as if Marosi’s time at the Keepmoat was up with his contract expiring, and him not even being second choice goalkeeper. But, with Stuckmann on the transfer list, and young goalkeeper, Ross Etheridge signing, meant that Ferguson has to take the executive decision and keep Marosi at the Keepmoat for another year.

Marosi is 22 years-old, and new signing, Etheridge is, 21, so it’s fair to say we have some youthful goalkeepers, but who might Fergie favor, come the first game of the season?

Well, I think it will be Etheridge, purely because he has more football league experience, and was at promotion chasing Accriginton Stanley last season; all be it, it didn’t end well for Stanley, because their still in the division, but nobody expected them to be challenging.

On the contrary, however, Marosi has said, “I am prepared to do whatever it takes”, suggesting he’s up to fight for the number 1 jersey, and with him only have a one-year contract with the club, we could see a conclusion to this within the next year.

If I was Ferguson in this position I would look to send out Marosi on loan, and look at the possibility of a youth player, such as Louis Jones to fill in on the bench, because I think Marosi has a lot of potential to become a good football league goalie, but he needs that experience.

Follows on our twitter account agreed that Etheridge should be the main goalkeeper next season with 95% of the 40 people, who took part in our pole voted for Etheridge, and 3% voted for Marosi, leaving Stuckmann (who is transfer listed) on 2%. So, it seems fans have decided who they want, but has Darren Ferguson?
